 Horton Wreath Society

Horton Wreath Society is a 501(c)3 organization that was organized to raise funds to place a live evergreen wreath on each marker in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. This will be the 11th year the Society has raised funds to honor our veterans and fallen heroes.

The Society strives to educate all, especially our youth and future generations, to remember the sacrifices by and to respect our veterans. This is a Free Family Event open to everyone that wishes to volunteer, no registration required, just show up. We usually begin with our welcome and laying of the ceremonial row of wreaths at 9:00 am. Family members with loved ones interred at the Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery will have the opportunity to lay wreaths for their loved ones first at 9:30 am, followed by general wreath placement by our volunteers. Light refreshments, coffee and hot cocoa will be available for the duration of the actual Wreath Laying.

Upon the laying of the last wreath, the Horton Wreath Society formal ceremony will be conducted at the Committal Shelter to honor and recognize the many sacrifices of our veterans. This ceremony will feature guest speakers, music, and a final procession of playing TAPS and Amazing Grace on the bagpipes leading everyone to the Main Memorial Wreath for the conclusion of all Ceremonies. This event usually concludes by 1 pm. Continuing with cemetery parking restrictions: there will be absolutely no parking on or at cemetery grounds, no exceptions.

All participants must park at designated satellite parking areas, due to a largescale ongoing construction project which will add additional burial sites at the cemetery, for free transportation to and from the cemetery, please go to our website for information regarding satellite parking. Additional information will be disseminated as it becomes available via the Horton Wreath Society webpage, and local media.

Patriot Guard Riders, Virginia District 5, Hampton Roads

The Virginia Patriot Guard Riders, District 5 – Hampton Roads has, since 2006, taken the lead to make this day an Official Mission of their Help on the Homefront (HOTH) programs. Members of the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders, who may also be members of many different motorcycle groups in the area, assist in the escort of the tractor-trailer with wreaths from Downtown Suffolk, VA, to the Albert G. Horton Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Along with grounds workers, they assist in traffic control on the sacred grounds, form flag lines and participate in the formal Wreath Ceremony conducted at the Committal Shelter.

In addition to being the Official Escort of the Ceremonial Wreaths, the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders team up with the youth of tomorrow and teach them the importance of OUR United States Veterans and the Service and Sacrifices they have made for OUR Country. Our children are our future and helping to teach them the cost of our Freedom is in line with the Horton Wreath Society's mission to REMEMBER the Sacrifices, RESPECT Our Veterans and EDUCATE Future Generations.
